local or general anesthesia?

I'm getting a cervical cerclage at 12 weeks. Should I get local or general anesthesia?

I did local epidural for my cerclage and it was relatively quick and painless. I was really nervous about it beforehand because I'd never had an epidural, but it really wasn't bad for me. They numb the area before they put in the epidural catheter so all I felt was a few light pricks in my back and that was it. Legs tingled from the numbing sensation. After surgery which lasted about 30 mins, the anestetia wore of after about 1.5-2 hours.  After surgery I had little discomfort just bleeding that went away after a day or so. With the amount of times that we have our blood taken when we're pregnant I would personally rank the discomfort as very minimal. If you think you'll be anxious, let them know because they don't like to give sedative during surgery in which case going under maybe better.

I did general at 13 weeks because I suffer from anxiety and I couldn't handle being awake. The doctor said general was better option then because if I was to stressed it would increase the risk of contractions and popping my water bag

I had general. They didn't give me an option it's just what they did. I was 12 weeks and 4 days when it was placed and I'm now 15 weeks and 3 days -- no complications thank goodness. Good luck!!

I did local. The spinal was a breeze and wore off quickly. 😉

I had an epidural that wasn't quite put incorrectly. It wore off in the middle of the surgery which was a nightmare period they ended up giving me a general but I was already traumatized. I did have another cerclage after that with my next baby, which went much better!

Didn't know you had a choice.  My drs told me I would be put to sleep. But on the day of the surgery the anesthesiologist said I was getting a spinal tap and would be awake. Well that plan didn't work and wound up with an epidural. And they gave me something to go to sleep anyways.

Thank you ladies. My doctor didn't give me an option and  want to give me general. I was just concern if general was safe for the baby. Now I know it is.
