Breaking A Lease
Have any of you had to leave a rental early due to financial issues? If so, how did you handle it?
I have a month left on my lease. We signed our lease with another woman who has been an absolute sore on our life. Our son had unexpected health issues a couple months ago which resulted in my husband taking over all financial responsibility and extra bills for him to juggle (I stay home with my son now, to care for and monitor him). We had to make a choice to: A. Pay medical bills & (first month, last month, deposit) Costs for our new home , OR B. Medical bills & last month rent (and be without a new home to move into).
This is completely unexpected after a fight with our insurance provider who refuse to give us any leeway with our outstanding medical bills. Staying in our current rental isn't an option either due to the roommate who lives in the basement level staying. She's caused havoc on our lives for the last 11 months and we simply can't do it nor would she even agree to it.
If we leave this week, we will not owe any back rent.. But we wouldn't be paying for an additional month (the last month on our lease). We did put down a security deposit which technically would cover the last month. We've also kept our level in excellent condition.
I feel TERRIBLE. I'm so anxious that I'm making myself sick. I KNOW we're in the wrong here. I know we planned poorly and should have given ourselves more cushion. There isn't anything I could read here that could make me feel worse. I would like to hear from someone who HAS been in a similar situation. What did you say? What was the result? How did you stop feeling like such a sh*tty adult/person?
I'm sick over this. We're moving our stuff into my FIL's this weekend until the move. I'm going to have to talk to the landlord tomorrow. Looking forward to some stories! Thanks!
