Bi/multilingual
I had a very interesting conversation with my daughters preschool teacher this morning. She told me that I should stop teaching my daughter other languages and start focusing only on English. She told that she has noticed that her language skills are far behind where they should be and believes that it is because I'm not speaking enough English to her and that it can effect her learning ability throughout school. She also said that it will confuse her and many kids who go through that often don't go to college.
However, it is very important to both myself and my husband that she is able to speak out languages. My husband speaks Cambodian and the elders of his family do not speak a lick of English. My family does speak English but being able to speak Arabic is important culturally to me and just makes it easier on the elders. So, when she is with me, I only speak Arabic. When she is with my husband, he only speaks Cambodian. When we are together, we only speak English.
For any bi or multilingual people out there, did you have trouble in school because of it? Teachers, do you notice kids who speak different languages lack in school? TIA.
