Long distance help :(

My boyfriend is in the army reserve and thus moves around a lot for time periods around 2 months. He isn't much of a texter but makes an effort to call each night (usually). It's just, our conversations on the phone are so dull and not us. And since we don't talk a lot, I seem to only have serious matters to discuss on the phone and I'm worried I'm starting to seem like high maintenance. Is there anything I can do to make this easier on both of us? I don't want to not raise things that happen to me during my days, but I don't want our phone calls to be jam packed with serious stuff. I feel like the spark is leaving :(
