Is buying cribs used safe?

Hi, everyone! I buy everything used. My mother brought up the other day that cribs are definitely something you want to buy new because of all the recalls. 
What's your thoughts on this?

Used crib is ok, but used mattress I'd pass

If you see a used crib you like, just quickly google the make/model number on your phone--that's what I did and mine is awesome!

Cribs and car seats are the things you usually shouldn't get second hand, as you don't know the history of the product... (Plus recalls). Unless it's from someone you trust of course. I know ikea sells a crib for 89 dollars, it's pretty plain but you could paint it :)

I'm all for used stuff but I've read scary things about using second hand Moses basket and cot mattresses - so those and a car seat and pram etc set are the only things I will be getting new. Oh and things like bottles and breast pump for hygiene reasons. Bought tonnes of used cities all good as new and 1/10 of the new price ! Car boot sales /yard sales are amazing for clothes ! I've got new dresses for £1. Designer ones which were probably £40 or more new. And I'm talking like ten-twenty of these. Got a big box of each size. Newborn 0-3. 3-6. 6-9 etc. Will use these plus what I get given as gifts. Saved an absolute fortune and I've found some gorgeous things that wouldn't even be for sale new!

Personally I wouldn't buy a crib from someone I didn't know. Because of recalls but mostly because I'm a germaphobe!

Yes but make certain it was made after June 20, 2011... that is when the crib standards changed. Anyone selling before then and they dont meet the new standards, are not supposed to... it is illegal to buy and sell

As long as it is sturdy, doesn't have a drop side, and the slats are close enough together then it should be fine. I would definitely buy the mattress new though.

As long as you set it up correctly and make sure all the screws are there and that's it's sturdy, I really don't see how it can be bad either.

I'm buying most things from people, iv got a cot that me and sisters etc have had but iv got Moses basket from online & clothes. Xx
