SSI benefits?
The social worker here told me that my daughter qualifies for social security income because of low birth weight. Apparently babies born less than 2lb 10oz qualify for this benefit for at least the first 6 months of life. This would also qualify her for supplemental Medicaid. Does anyone else have any experience with this? Anyone taken advantage of it? I can't decide if it's something I should pursue or not; I've always carried my own health insurance and have never taken any handouts from anyone before.. It feels weird to think I could get free money just because she was a tiny preemie. But if I'm entitled to it, I guess maybe I should sign up for it. I'm also worried it could label her in some sort of way for the future.. Like would my health insurance potentially deny her if she qualifies for supplemental Medicaid? Any input/opinions would be appreciated.
