Anyone combatting cultural pregnancy practices?

Question

My husband is Chinese and so far I've been told I can't lift (anything- no matter how small), I cannot wear high heels, I cannot hang anything up - not a picture, not even a pair of pants.

Also, after baby is born my mil will be live in for the first 30 days. She will take care of all household chores and my job will be 100% caring for the new baby! I'll basically be on house arrest except for doctors visits.  When the first 30 days are up, we will host a large "coming out" party for the whole family!

I can't decide if I love the tradition or if I hate it?? Any Asians moms have the same expectation??

I think there are a lot of positives here! I know that some of the things sound silly, but come delivery you will LOVE the help around the house. My friend is 1/2 Chinese (mom side Chinese and dad's american). She had to laugh off the weird things, but for the most part it is a giving of love and support. I think you can still be yourself and do what you want, but if you look at it from a helpful perspective I think you can find some good parts about it!

30 days and will come take care of all household stuff...that's awesome! This pretty much trumps any negative aspects of this cultural difference in my eyes.

Also, I think the party thing is really nice. You'll have great pictures that your child can cherish someday when they're older and seeing all the loving friends and family that were around them that day.

My mil is from South Korea and she offered to come stay with us with our first but I told her it wasn't necessary mainly because they live 2 hours away and i don't know what my fil would do without her😂. Other than that she tried to make me eat like 3rd and 4th helpings every time we ate together, I'm like I eat till I'm full I don't need any more and she would insist so I had to be firm
Lol. 
Other than that, no silly wives tales like the reaching up or anything. There's no science behind those ;)
As for her staying to take care of the house while you care for baby, girl take advantage of that! Bond with baby! Work on breastfeeding! As long as she's not driving you nuts, that will be very helpful.

With my first my mil and fill came to stay with us for about 3 weeks. I thought I would hate it but she truly made my life easier and my bonding with baby better and easier. Sure, there were some times I wanted to just be alone but it was well worth it.

I'm not Chinese neither is my SO. His mother is taking 1 week off of work when the baby is born to come help with the house as is my mother. I think it's an awesome gesture, and it's an important time to be there with your baby. I did this with my first as well and it made things way easier. As for the heels and no lifting that just wouldn't work for me lol. I'm 5'3" I have to wear heels to see things from a normal perspective 😜 and as I mentioned I have another child and me not lifting her would fill my days with a ton of temper tantrums lol. Best of luck with learning cultural differences.
