Irregular period

So my period has always been semi-irregular not too bad though. Back in January of 2015 all the way to July i hadnt gotten my period. I went to my family doctor and she told me not to worry unless I go close to a year without getting my period. Im worried because if im not getting my period, im not ovulating. I dont want to have kids now, but i do in the future and im concerned if i dont get this figured out now there may not be a way to fix it in the future. Opinions? Am i overreacting?
