Clomid and timed intercourse

So my RE went over all my options for ttc with PCOS, and he wants to try clomid and a timed intercourse round. I see several posts about clomid. Are those of you that are on clomid doing timed intercourse as well, or just taking the meds and bd'ing on your own? Only reason I ask is because it costs $150 for meds and $700 for the timed intercourse portion which includes several sonograms, blood tests, etc. Just seems to be a bit much, but I'm not sure if my RE just wants to monitor me closely for ovulation. Can anyone share how they took clomid? Just by itself and BD on your own or did you take it and have tests and timed intercourse done as well?
