Ovulation pain?

I have heard people say that they get small cramp like pains on one side of their pelvis a few days after their period and that is your body ovulating. I have never had this until a few says ago so I am just wondering if this is really common and how long it lasts? It has been three days now with minor cramping on one side and occasional sharp stabbing pain across my whole pelvis area. Thanks
