My best friend and I do this a lot. There are varying degrees of love that don't involve a relationship (bf/gf, gf/gf, bf/bf). I love my best friend like family, she's the sister I never got to have (no offense to my actual sisters - they're older than me, I love them too.) I love my nieces and nephews, my cousins, my grandparents. I love most of my coworkers (some I tolerate.) All of those are not the degree of love that is intimate and shared between two people. I love them as human beings. I love them for being there when I need someone to talk to. I love them for lending a helping hand even when I don't ask for it.

I often tell people I love them or "oh my god just marry me already" jokingly, but I feel like there's a difference between love and in love because there's like platonic love: you're my friend I will protect you cause I luv ya etc etc but there's also romantic love and they're a bit different
