What are some Pros and Cons of the Depo Shot?

I've said it again & I'll say it before - I loved the depo shot. I was on it for 6 years. When I was on the pill, I could never remember to take it. The shot was only every 3 months & you have a 2 week span to get it for it to be effective. Never had a pregnancy scare. After 4 years of being on it, I had a bone density scan. It was quick, easy, & covered by insurance. I did not have any bone loss from taking it though it was recommended that I take a calcium supplement. It stopped my periods all together which was awesome because I had severe cramps. No extreme weight gain or mood swings. Got my regular cycle back after 6 months. It's not bad for everyone. It sucks that so many people talk negative about something just because it wasn't the perfect option for them. You should discuss it with your doctor & the two of you can decide together.

Pro: don't have to sorry about pill, ring, etc, periods usually stop altogether.

Con: it's possible you will have more than normal weight gain, sex drive drops, can take longer to get out of your system.

I got on the depo shot when I was 16 and I weighed 130 pounds I got off it at 20 because I gained over 80pounds...

Don't get it. The only good thing about it is you don't need to remember to take a pill. It caused me alot of intense bleeding for three straight months and then the heaviest periods I've ever had. It also caused me to gain 20 lbs and once you want to try to have a baby, it can take up to two years to even ovulate after your first shot and it can cause you to become sterile. It can also cause osteoporosis.

Pros: easier to do a shot every 3 months than a pill everyday. 
Cons: I bled 8 months straight without stopping. I gained weight, became very depressed, and moody. I also had TTC afterwards. 
I only took one dosage and it almost ruined my relationship, so I never went back. Took me a while to get pregnant after getting off of it. I don't recommend it at all.

Don't do it!!!!!!! I was on it for 2 years and i wish I never went on it! It took 6 months to get my period back and my vagina was so dry I had to use moisturisers and extra lubricant. It hurt to have sex and I was so sore. When I went to see my gynaecologist she said that it tricks your body into thinking you are going through the menopause and drys you up totally! Never never ever again!!!

Pro: I didn't get pregnant. Cons: Weight gain due to increased appetite, a lot of bleeding first few months, and osteoporosis and hip fracture due to loss of bone mass.
