How do you have twins? Is it genetics or is there a possible way to have twins without the genetics?  Im curious to find out why?

Previous poster is incorrect. It is impossible for two sperm to fertilize one egg. Identical twins happen randomly (no hereditary factor) when an egg is fertilized by one sperm and then splits during cell division resulting in two embryos with the same DNA. Fraternal twins happens when two eggs are released nd fertilized by two different sperm (one per an egg) fraternal twins have the same amount of DNA in common as anyother two siblings. Fraternal twins can run in families if there is a hyper ovulation gene present. This gene is passed down maternally so if your grandmother, aunt or mother had twins it increase your odds. It simply means you are more likely to release one or several eggs when you ovulate. Other factors that increase twining odds are being taller, being over 30, being African American, a higher BMI, and eating more yams. The last one is related to a correlational study of women in an area where yams are a staple food. If you are hoping to have twins, you can't really increase your chances with optional factors, besides fertility drugs. the average woman has a 1 in 89 chance of having twins. I have a 1 in 7 chance as my mom was a fraternal twin.

The twin gene is carried on the mothers side, so if your mom has twins in her family, you're more likely to have twins. 
Example, my sister in law has twin siblings. And my sister in law's youngest children are twins.

There are different ways of having twins, either 2 eggs are released or 2 sperm fertilize the egg. (essentially that's it) it's more likely if twins run in the family, but can happen to anyone. They're also more common if you're taking fertility medication to induce ovulation, which can cause more than one egg to be released.
