Drug testing pregnant women?

Asking for my brother:

His now ex gf is pregnant with his child. He left her due to her abysing drugs, cocaine, meth, duster cans... When he left he didn't know she was pregnant and neither did she. Now that she found out she's pregnant (10 weeks) he's worried about he using drugs and harming their child and herself. She has a child from a previous relationship that was taken away because she was driving drunk with him. Can he get a hold of someone and make sure she's staying clean by drug testing her throughout her pregnancy?

I would suggest asking a police officer, they can direct him where to go. They might send him to family court and if the judge thinks he has a case they will do mandatory drug testing. He could also win custody this way.

My ob takes a urine sample to make sure everything is ok and they have a sign in the bathroom that they test for drugs also, and if they find any in your system they will report you. Hopefully her ob does the same.

They for sure can if they think something is up. Get a hold of CPS or the police and the can point you in the right direction.

If she's possibly using drugs, she probably will be avoiding prenatal care... I've seen that happen a lot which is unfortunate.

He has to find a legal way to protect his unborn child. Go to a police station or ask a lawyer what the next step is. Hopefully if she's not using anymore she can step up and be a good mother but if not, I hope he can get full custody somehow to protect that baby. Some people just shouldn't have kids.....ugh

In my state north Carolina when the child is born and they suspect drug abuse from the mother they will test her and baby and have a social worker come to home and inspect it before the baby gets to go home with the parents! A guy I worked with went through this because they were both on drugs and then 1 month later they were riding with their baby and 2 year old son and got pulled over and caught with meth possession! Sad situation! I know this wasn't your question though, sorry!

Probably can't do a thing unless she has an open CPS case against her. Unfortunately this is why so many babies are born addicted. Most times you can't do anything until the baby is born so make sure he's at the hospital for the birth. If the baby tests positive, they call CPS.

What he can do is go to her appointments with her and talk to the dr. In private and discuss his concerns. It gives the dr. A heads up, and looks good in the courts that he is actually a concerned parent and not just a angry ex looking to make trouble for her. Plus it helps him keep an eye on the baby and ownits developing as well

It depends on where you live. Some states have mandatory testing others don't. Protective services can't really do much while she's pregnant. They can however do a removal or institute services once the baby is born. I actually disagree with mandated testing, because it encourages women to just avoid prenatal care altogether. I'd recommend calling local CPS directly, explain your concerns and ask for any possible referral services.
