How does going about a blood test work?

I'm ten weeks and one day. My boyfriend and I really want to know the sex. We know his relative took a blood test and found out the sex. Its apparently out of pocket costs with your own private insurance hopefully covering some of it. Is this correct? Where exactly do you go or is this done with your obgyn? Please let me know your experience for any of you who have gone through this and was it accurate. Thank you!

My understanding is that if you are not over the age of 35, those tests are elective and would come out of pocket. I have awesome insurance and I'm 33, I would have had to pay for it out of pocket. Not worth it to me. We found out at 16 weeks

If you're not over the age of 35, you'll be billed for it (around $135). It takes 7-10 business days to get the results. I had it done and it was worth every penny to be able to start planning sooner. It will tell you sex accurately, and let you know the risk of certain genetic disorders. I got my results back over a week ago and we were told we are having a baby girl with low risk for everything. So blessed! While we wouldn't have cared f she had downs, we wanted to know early so that we could be as prepared as possible. I would def get the test.

I called my insurance company to find out, the doctor gave me the medical code to tell them the exact test. I took panorama which is almost $3,000 and between my insurance and Medicaid as secondary it was fully paid. If Medicaid wouldn't have covered it it would have only been $70 out of pocket after my health insurance. Panorama has a page to tell the estimated cost. I had no reason that would have made the test necessary either it was just an elective and I chose to take it too.

I got thre Harmony test done at 11 weeks. Standard procedure is normally that insurance won't cover it unless you are over 35 or have a family history of genetic abnormalities. It's normally around $800 but the company who does the test does some sort of deal for my insurance company (tricare) where it's only $130. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I had to call them because they originally sent me a bill for the full amount. The only sense I could make of it is that they want to bill insurance companies even though they deny it so they can show them how many people are opting to get them done so they'll eventually cover it. They told me the hospital didn't send my insurance info and I said, what's the point if they won't cover it and they said, we send them the bill anyways.

Your insurance won't cover all of it more than likely. If you have Medicaid, it will cover all of it. You just tell them you want the test done at your apt. That's what I did at my 12 week apt & they just took my blood. Results took 2 weeks to come back & I found out at 14 weeks what I was having. Just be careful, not all insurances will be the same out of pocket expense. The test is expensive. It could cost $100 or more out of pocket.
