Baby shower thank you gifts?

My husband are having a joint baby shower for all friends and family, not just for my friends. My husband thinks we are supposed to give a thank you gift equaling the gift we receive for our shower. If they spend $100 on their gift for us, we should get a thank you gift $100 worth as well. I think this is ridiculous. Is this a common practice?

I've never heard of that. I've seen party favor gifts but I was under the impression that a gift is a gift and the nice thing to do in return is to send a thank you card in acknowledgment of their gift.  That's like going to a birthday party and expecting a gift for the gift you brought. It's a celebration not a exchange.

That's insanity. You might as well not have a party and buy your own "gifts." I have however heard of small favors similar to what you would get at a wedding reception. Something small or edible to take with.

Never heard of it but the point in a baby shower is to help you get baby things to help you with the expenses. If you get people equal gifts they may as well not bring you anything and just tell you what they wild spend and you spend it on your own baby gift.

No way, you should just have party favors and send out thank you notes. If you are playing games you can have fun prizes for the winners.

Seems a bit ridiculous, especially if a lot of people attend! I would send them thank you letters with a small gift or if you want to get fancy include a gift card to a nice restaurant!

No way that's too much. We had a joint party and did party favors and thank you cards afterward. The point of a baby shower is for them to help you with preparing for a baby and celebrate.

No, I think providing food of some short at the party and perhaps a small party "favor" to take home is enough, plus I think it's good to send hand written thank you cards after.

That's a little ridiculous. Maybe party favors? When I had my bridal shower we gave out fancy soap favors and also had a ton of good for the guests. But an equal gift would just be like a Christmas gift exchange not a baby shower haha.
