*** Poll results for ** is it ok to hit a dog?

So the reason I posted the poll " Is it OK to hit a dog to teach it?" Was because I've noticed alot of polls with a majority vote for yes when hitting children. I like to use the word hitting because by definition that is what it is - Hit - bring one's hand or a tool or weapon into contact with someone or something..

So the results of the poll was a big majority vote NO its not OK!

So if we can teach a dog without harming them why not children?

If school teachers can teach a whole class of 30 children without harming them then why can't parents teach one?

The most common comment I've seen on the polls are " I was hit/smacked & I turned out OK" Well alot of people have gone through things they perhaps shouldn't and turned out OK! I'd rather turn out brilliant than OK myself..

Just because it's all you know doesn't mean there are not more productive ways.

Don't you think children would potentially respect you more later for taking the time to teach them right from wrong in ways that does not cause them physical pain?

The only children I've personally ever seen with behavioral issues are ones that get corporal punishment at home or (which goes without saying) no discipline..

Time outs are not the only way to teach, for example when my child was 3 I taught them the concept of money, when they desperately wanted something from the shop and I couldn't afford it I would say I don't have enough money to buy it and we would count the money in my purse and that was always an acceptable answer for my child. So instead of just saying no then the child reacts out of frustration for not understanding a situation then take the time to help them understand.

They also learned how to ask for things properly like mum can we afford that toy?

Imagine seeing a 3 year old asking their mother if they can afford to buy a toy! Adorable right!!

If a 3 year old can understand that then why not other children??

Discipline and teaching starts from day 1, not when the child has already "learned" behavioral issues or bad behavior. If taught properly from the beginning then there shouldn't be behavioral issues to deal with. Unless there is an underlying medical reason for it, either way hitting isn't going to fix that!

At the end of the day either choice we all love our children and want what is best for them.
