Pack and play for sleeping

I see a lot of women saying they used a pack a play for their babies to sleep in, vs a crib or bassinet

I had gotten one as a gift and set it up today, curious though do y'all just put the baby on the thing or do you purchase a mattress and put it inside the pack and play? Sorry if my question seems stupid just curious because the bottom of it is super hard, with no support

I know babies aren't supposed to sleep on memory foam (I'm being extreme) but literally it's like 3 centimeters of a board
