Depo shot and weight gain

So I'm really nervous about getting my first depo shot. I don't want to gain weight. I run a lot and eat fairly healthy but I'm still very paranoid about gaining any weight.

I haven't gotten the shot yet and I'm not due to get it until around January 3rd. Can I talk to my doctor and change to the pill before I have it done?
