Hymens

How do you know if your hymen has broken? I've been told it doesn't always break straight away. I've only been having sex since October but the first time felt uncomfortable, it didn't hurt. Then I got ontop of my boyfriend, he was sitting up on a couch. And it started really hurting, the first time it's eve hurt when im im top. Did my hymen break or was it just the position?
