Which would you chose?

Question

My hospital has offered for me to see a midwife or a doctor. A midwife is only guaranteed at time of delivery if I switch over to seeing the midwife team. My doctor said it could be any one of the doctors and can't guarantee she'll be available if I stick with seeing my doc. Pros and cons?

Answer

The basic difference between a CNM and an OB is that the OB is a surgeon. Most women don't need a surgeon. If it turns out you do and you were being seen by a midwife, they'll send the surgeon over. The problem with having surgeons deliver normal healthy babies is that they tend to resort to surgery sooner than they should (since they know how to do it and they feel more in control doing the surgery).

Quick question.... Can you have a midwife if you are getting a scheduled c section?

Answer

I chose a midwife for that exact reason. My doctor would follow me through my pregnancy, but there was a one in nine chance I'd get him for the birth. I went with two midwives, who I alternate between, and I for sure get one of them when it comes time. It was so important to me that I had someone I knew and trusted when I was in labour, and I'm so happy with my decision.
