Fiancé has no ambition?

My fiancé has now been out of work for a year now, other than odd jobs he does for people around where he lives. He keeps applying at places and he isn't getting any calls back, right now he is going through Michigan Works to find a job. It doesn't help that we are long distance right now, he promised when he got another job we would move in together he wants to be able to provide for me first. We have been together 2 1/2 years and I'm so impatient, my parents keep telling me he has no ambition, and no drive to work or to get a job, and say that he isn't trying when I've been with him when he's gone to apply at places. I'm really not sure what to do or think, I love this man to death but I do have my doubts, that are mostly brought on by the things my parents say. What are your guys opinions on the matter? Should I believe what he's telling me and believe that he is doing what he can do to find work or believe it when my parents say he will never be able to support us because he has no drive to work?
