The best way to be sure they are ready is that they have all of these skills: sit on own, pincher grasp, coordinated hand to mouth movement, and had lost the reflex to push against something inserted into the mouth. Usually these all come together around 6 mounths.

I suggest you read Baby Led Weaning. It changed my life with my daughter. She(4) has never been picky and has an excellently tuned sense of her body and hunger vs boredom/eating for other reasons.

I waited until 6 months so there was less risk of stomach issues. Start out with a stage 1 oatmeal or rice cereal. Feed one meal a day for a little bit then start introducing new purées slowly. I started with one meal a day then worked out way up to two then up to three. Use the rule of three when trying new foods to rule out any allergies (feed the same food for three days before introducing a new food.

I introduced cereal to my twins first at 4 months and then baby food solids at 5 in a half months pretty much 6 months. Now, they are 8 months and get 3 meals a day plus their bottles. Hope I helped.
