Who should say I love you first?

(For same sex couples, I wasn't sure how to pose this question but feel free to answer what makes sense to you to help me out!)

My fiancé told me he loved me first. I was nervous as we hadn't known each other for long but he told me not to say it back until I was ready (and if I fall in love with him) so I didn't until I was ready.   Honestly it doesn't matter who says it first.

My boyfriend said it first. It just kinda slipped out. We were laying down, watching some shows and joking around. I said something punny and corny, we were laughing, and then he just sighs and says I love you. I was shocked, to be honest. I didn't say it back until 5 months later. And we're still together 4 years later.

I told my husband "I love you" first and completely on accident.  It's a funny story to tell now though at the time I was terrified and ran away.
