Love sucks but help?

Okay so me and my (whatever he is now) were dating almost two years. We live together & things got super rocky last summer so we took a short break, but got back together almost immediately. Things got bad again and now we are really broken up. {it was totally my fault bc I wasn't being the girl he fell in love with} He's my first real relationship and I'm so in love with him this whole thing makes me cry everyday. He says he just wants us to be friends, but how can you be friends with someone you're in love with??? He also says he wants us to build a friendship and hopes that we can get back together bc he wants to be with me. What do I do??? I've never gone through this and I can't handle it anymore. 🙁
