Pacemaker while pregnant?!

Does anyone know if you can go through surgery to have a pacemaker put in while pregnant?? I have had heart issues for a while and my heart Dr just kept putting it off. Now my heart is so weak and only running at 30-40 bpm. And then shoots to over 200+ bpm. I have needed a pacemaker for 2 years but they have held off til now I am at a very high risk.

I'm a nurse practitioner for an electrophysiologist and he has put pacemakers in pregnant women. It's best to wait until you are well into the first trimester (or at least 5 wks, depending on what your OB recommends) and they will be cautious with sedation and xray to reduce risk to your baby. Especially as the demands on your heart and body increase during pregnancy, you need higher heart rate to keep up. You will likely feel a lot better after getting the pacemaker. Good luck!!

Your doctor will be able to decide that. There are some anesthetics that are safe while pregnant and do not cross the placenta.
