I'm O positive blood type. What does it mean? Is it good or bad?

Answer

There is no "good" or "bad" when it comes to blood type. The letter refers to what type of antigen is in your blood (these produce antibodies to fight infections and such) the positive just means your blood has the rH antigen on it as well. Your blood, if donated can be given to anyone that has a positive blood type. But if you needed a blood donation it would have to come from an O+ or O- person. Doctors worry about blood type when a patient is pregnant and she has a negative blood type, but the father has positive. If your baby gets a positive blood type a neg blood type body will try to "attack" the embryo. They refer to this as the rH factor. They can now give shots to prevent this though. My mom had to get them and had 6 healthy children.

You won't have to worry about needing a Rhogam shot ever, but if the baby has a different main type (A or B or AB), sometimes they're at greater risk for jaundice after birth. It's not as big a deal as negative mom and positive baby, but it is something to watch for after birth.
