Inductions: routine practice?

I have to ask, as I am in Canada and I know people on the app are from all over, but seem mostly to be in the states. Is scheduled inductions a routine practice? I see a lot of people posting about their scheduled inductions weeks away, and just very curious.

It's really gotten out of control. The induction and csection rate here in the states is skyrocketing. Mostly due to insurance purposes and convenience for the doctors. It's become a "norm" and "standard". Sure there ARE medical reasons to induce. But let's face it. A doctor says "we should induce for the well being of your child" for whatever reason.. A very tired and pregnant momma will agree. Why wouldn't she? She's very ready to meet her baby and trusts the doctor.

The U.S. C-section average rate is a little over 30% and in Canada it's around 28%.  It has definitely gone up over the years but I think it seems like everyone is getting induced or having c-sections because those are the people seeking the most information/support.

Most people get induced because the doctor says it is best. With a midwife they let you go till 42 weeks or longer if baby is good.

Yep! My doctor says she won't let me go ten days past my due date. But also that, if I wanted, I could be induced any day now (I'm 39+2). It's a little intimidating because I want to let my baby come when she's ready, but I feel like there's obviously a reason why she's  wanting to induce. It's nerve wracking not to listen to a doctor because the reason you go to a doctor is so that they can keep you (and baby) healthy!!!! You're supposed to trust them! Agh!

I also have wondered the same! It seems like many mamas are posting about their scheduled induction at 38-39 weeks. I thought if you go past your due date or for a medical reason, were the only times inductions are used. I guess I need to research more about this trend. Its enticing to actually "plan birth" this time so we are fully prepared (our daughter can calmly go to our family's home, we  then head to the hospital, etc.). But it just seems unnatural for it to be only on convienence and not medically needed. Hmmm.

My midwife will not induce until 41 weeks as long as there's is no medical reason. They actually don't go c-sections at all for non medical reasons so even if I were 41 weeks and wanted to schedule a c-section they would say no and try to let him come on his own.

I was only offered the possibility of induction or cesarean when they thought he'd be over 10 pounds. He's around 8 now and I'm 39w 5d; they said that's normal and healthy so we'll just have to wait.
I know it's rare but I hate the fact that I might go over my due date and hate fearing something could go wrong or his heart will stop beating... Given the option id get him out now no doubt about it!

Yes it's bananas. But the new guidelines, and what my OBs office follows, is no non medically necessary inductions or c-sections prior to 39 weeks. Having a predicted big baby is also not a medical reason unless the predicted weight is above 10 or more pounds.

My doctor won't let me go past 41 weeks because of my gestational diabetes, which is actually pretty well-controlled by diet so I'm not even on meds for it. I really don't want to be induced so we're hoping our little guy decides to come on his own before then. We're encouraging him with all the home remedies/wives tales like lots of walking, spicy foods, eggplant, pineapple, etc. lol

My last dr didnt let u go over 40 weeks. Im not sure about where i go now. I havent asked yet. Im use to having one dr. The place i go now ive had to see all 6 of them. So thats new to me.

My doctor said I absolutely shouldn't go over 41 weeks. He had been asking repeatedly if I wanted to be induced at 39 weeks (which would have been today). I said no, let's wait and see how things play out. Today I found out that tomorrow is his last day before vacation and he won't be back until I'm 41 weeks 🙁. Guess that's why he kept asking to induce. However, another gal I work with had a baby last year at the same hospital with different doc and she was induced at 39 weeks.
