What do you think should be taught in schools?

After reading hulas post it got me thinking, if you could choose what kids could be taught in school what would it be? 
For me I wish they'd taught more about life, managing money, credit, mortgages, etc along side the normal curriculum. I think that is equally important and it sets you for the future because you know what to expect.

We actually learn all things finance, moving out, bills, how to buy a car, and how to budget. It's mandatory to graduate. It's called economics, you take it as a senior. It helps you budget your entire plan after graduation.

If I had to pick a class to learn id say home ec. We don't have that class anymore. We also lost drivers Ed.

Music. I believe there are studies that say that kids who learn an instrument will be smarter than those who do not.

That is a really good question. I do think that sex ed needs some serious improvement. I remember  having sex ed in 6th grade and again in 8th grade, and by sex ed I mean in health class we briefly  discussed STDs and watched a video of childbirth. That is all I remember and being told the only way to avoid these things was abstinence, condoms and such were brought up but the main focus is abstinence. I also think they need to teach more basic life skills and better college prep. I think they should teach some things that will help kids actually make it in the real world, building resumes, finding jobs, money management etc. Not every kid is lucky enough to  have parents who help them out with all this stuff.  I know it's not the schools job to parent a child because some parents aren't doing their job, it just makes me sad because I feel like a lot of the things taught in school are just focused on what's inside a text book and not what really happens in real life beyond high school.

I wish there was your basics: English, Math, Science, and History. Then I wish you either had to do Gym, Dance, Band, or take a computer class (all 4 years). You had to take a life management class which incorporates economics (writing checks, loans, purchasing property etc.) and politics. Also at least one year about sexual health and I'm talking about what's a normal period or what's a normal feeling in the testicular region (this is important for yourself and your children one day).

I think it's sort of ridiculous that so many people think teachers should be teaching kids how to change a tire, how to open a bank account, how to pay taxes, all of those things can be learned in 20-30 minutes or less by ANYONE who has a bank account, owns a car, or pays taxes. It's not information that is hard to access. There's also Google. We should be teaching kids about history, about science, math, things that are necessary for a well rounded education about the world around them. Most importantly, they should be taught to think critically, because that is a skill that most of the population lacks, and it's an enormously important one. The whole "no more grades!" And "away with standardized testing!" obsession is completely ignorant. What's your alternative? How do we assess kids on the LARGE scale in an efficient way?
