Absolutely, and as a matter fact and that is how most people transfer it, as it is pretty uncomfortable to have sex during an outbreak. People that do not have outbreaks, even for years, still have phases when the virus is "shedding", when the virus travels up the nerve to the skin but no outbreak or symptoms are experienced. The virus can be transmitted during outbreaks or shedding times. There is no way to tell when the virus is shedding. People with HSV2 Who are on a daily suppressive therapy, like Val tracks, have a greatly decreased amount of shutting and outbreak occurrences and are therefore unlikely to pass on the virus, although it still is possible. Herpes is so incredibly common, and hopefully the stigma and shame attached to it will lessen in the future.

It’s called asymptomatic viral shedding and yes you most certainly can pass the virus along without an outbreak. The risk is low but it is there and very real.

Sex during an outbreak is painful. You can most definitely transfer it without any outbreaks or even knowing. That's how I got it.
