I heard if it felt this way it was the cervix actually thinning and dilating? True?

Answer

Not always. I felt like my first was clawing, kicking, punching my cervix for the last two months of pregnancy. But I didn't actually start dilating till 40 weeks after my water broke. I was like 80% effaced for the last two weeks.
