Should attempted suicide be illegal?

"Suicide is defined as the act of intentionally ending ones own life. Before the Suicide Act 1961, it was a crime to commit suicide, and anyone who attempted and failed could be prosecuted and imprisoned. While the families of those who succeeded could also be prosecuted.
The Suicide Act 1961 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It decriminalised the act of suicide in England and Wales so that those who failed the attempt to kill themselves would no longer be prosecuted."
I am unaware of the laws in other countries past and present, however I do live in the UK and have only recently found out that it used to be illegal.
As someone who has tried and failed to commit suicide, it surprises me that this was something people could be prosecuted for. What do you think?
