What's mine is yours?

I find it strange when couples do the whole "I'll pay for this because you paid for rent this week".

Excuse my ignorance but if you're already living together shouldn't you have a joint account? I mean yes if you both work, it's only fair that you both pay/take turns but isn't it a bit much to keep tabs on who paid what? It's a partnership not a business deal.
