Difficulty conceiving after long-term use of BC pill?

I've been on birth control pills since I was 16 (Mother started me on it even though I only became sexually active at 26). Anywho, this is my 11th year being on BC pills and my boyfriend & I want to try conceiving around late summer/early Fall. I read that sometimes it takes long to conceive after being on the pill because the body has to readjust to its natural cycle. How common is this? I thought I would go off the pill now & expect to conceive a few months later but my mom told me she usually gets pregnant the same month she goes off the pill :0!
