Best time to get an epidural?

Question

I'm a FTM and I know I'll most likely be getting an epidural (I'm a baby when it comes to pain but I am going to try to go without it for as long as I can handle it) but I've heard stories where they wear off before the baby is born. I was wondering when the best time would be?

I'm pretty sure they stick it in you and then you have control of the button that releases the medicine. That's what my friend who had it told me but someone correct me if I'm wrong! Lol

My doctor won't give one until after 6cm because he says the earlier ones are the ones you risk running out. There is a limit to how much medication they can give you in a certain time period, even with a button. The button will let you go longer between amounts, essentially lasting "longer", but you can't get more doses more often with one.  Many doctors also prefer to wean you off of it some as it comes time to push so that you can get the sensation and also so you can get up and walking again sooner after delivery (less rates of hemorrhage and faster healing with movement).

I just had my baby Thursday my epidural did wear off the best time to take it is at 6 or 7 cm get the epidural later into labor I got it at 4cm and it wore off at 9cm and I was in so much pain just keep the pain in until the end!

I got it after I dilated 5 cm. 3 hours later, I gave birth and it wore off as the doctor was stitching me up. I didn't have the control button either, just a dose in my spine.

With my first I got it when I couldn't bare the pain anymore then it wore off & I felt everything .. With my second kid I got it about 7pm had her about 1 am & didn't feel a thing the entire time 2 pushes she was out & the epidural didn't wear off until about 5 that morning

Mine wore off...... it was horrible. I got mine around 5cm I think.

They'll give you a bolus (basically a small bump of meds) if it wears off. They've come a long way with managing labor epidurals. They'll start it when you're a little further dilated, tho, so they're not pumping anesthetics in you for a super long time.

These days, the only way they'll not do one is if you're expected to deliver sooner than the epidural has time to kick in (about 30-45 minutes).

And if you're still nervous, your OB can give you more information, and even have you talk to an anesthesiologist about your concerns. Don't be afraid to be a champion for your own healthcare! And good luck!
