What the point

Of following people? If their profile is private and you follow them it's still private so what's the point??

I follow trolls so I can keep an eye on them.

I follow those who spark my interest. But I could care less.

The point of following people is that what those people participate in will be more at the forefront of your glow interface.
For example I follow (I'm going to use Amanda;) ). What topics Amanda participates in will now be higher up in the CC bracket. I'll see it more easily.

Even if they have their account on private the purpose of the follow is still fulifilled so you'll see what topics they're being active in.

Because you know who you follow and trolls like to change their names. My stuff is hidden because there was a troll who went to my personal topics and brought them up during an arguement.
