Difference between doctor or midwife?

Just found out the doctor I'm switching to that was recommended to me is actually a midwife and idk how to feel about that, because I thought they were the same thing. What's the difference, and which did you perfer? I can still change my mind to someone else in the hospital but I heard she's the best.

If she's the best in your area, go for her. 
I was going to become a midwife. The program I was starting was 4 years but it was a sped up program because of a lack of prenatal care in certain areas and I would have to agree to work there. I would have to shadow doctors and midwives for 3,000 births before beginning my practicum which lasted for I believe it was also 3,000 births. The normal program was 7 years. When I was born, the GP doctor at the hospital had never delivered a baby before. So I guess the requirements are different. I've been present for 1st time deliveries by doctors. But they do have regulations on experience now I believe as well.

Look at it this way. The main difference is the doctor can perform surgeries. If you have a normal birth then there's no reason to not use the midwife. They are highly trained in childbirth. I had a doctor and a midwife because I had to have a c section. I love my midwife. She's awesome and she still came to visit me in the hospital. I trust her completely for if and when we have another child because I'd love to try a VBAC.

I feel like midwives are more caring directly towards the patient & want to have a more "intimate" i cant really think of the word, relationship. Im going to school to get my bachelors degree in nursing then further my education to become a midwife & i want to because it's a more hands on "intimate" bond with the patient being that a midwife can take care of the woman before during & after labor & the child for a month after as well

Watch "The Business of Being Born." Obviously take that with a grain of salt, BUT midwives are just as capable & if something happens, you'll still be in a hospital where they have an OB on call who can take care of you if needed. Don't be worried, many women actually prefer a midwife. ❤️

I used a midwife and delivered in a hospital. Best of both worlds. Midwives give you choices and explain procedures to you. Many doctors "tell" you what to do (in my experience). Many of my friends that used doctors for their prenatal care ended up with "emergency " csections while I and other friends that used a midwife delivered our babies vaginally and naturally, which was my goal.

A midwife is not a doctor and they do not have the medical knowledge or background that an experienced OBGYN (doctor who delivers babies) does. In the event of an emergency you would be 100x safer in a good OB's hands in a hospital. That's not to say midwives aren't qualified to deliver babies, but they simply do not have the medical knowledge of an M.D. (Doctor).
