New notifications, but no idea what's new?

All the time, I get notifications, but when I click on them to see what is going on, nothing new shows in the list. Nothing changes. How am I supposed to know what the notification is for without having to scroll and click on every old one to find out if anything happened? I know that lots of conversations have been cut off because I couldn't find them again, or didn't know which conversation was updated.

Also, if I click on a notification of someone responding to me, I have to scroll forever to find mine. It doesn't take me to my comment. Am I doing something wrong?
