First trimester screening vs. NIPT?

Can anyone explain the difference? I passed on the first trimester screening but something was found in my anatomy scan and I am being referred to another office for the NIPT testing. Just want to know what I should expect.

Answer

The NIPT is also called a free fetal DNA test. It looks at fetal DNA from a blood sample and checks for the major trisomies (13,18 and 21), plus sex chromosomes. Some versions may test for additional chromosomal abnormalities. It is more accurate than some of the first trimester bloodwork, but still just a screening test. If it picks up abnormalities, you'll be offered conformational testing (cvs or amnio).
