Medication options for birth?

Question

What do you suggest? Can you share your stories with me about medication for delivery and what you liked or didn't like? Im 5'9" and 115lbs and growing! Im tall but small framed. Sensetive to medication. It would be nice to have some unbiased opinions as I know some hospitals push for the paitent to have medication. Did you have natural, epidural, other meds? Thanks so much for sharing with me! :)

Any pain Meds that keep you from feeling pain decreases the natural hormone oxytocin. Pitocin is meant to mimick oxytocin, but it is not the same thing. Pitocin makes contractions harder on your body and your baby, causing them to be more painful than natural contractions. This is why so many women get the epidural. Their doctor says "you aren't going fast enough" and gives pitocin to speed up the process. The woman then cannot handle the pain and opts for epidural. The two medicines also counteract each other in the body, one speeds up labor while the other slows it down. Therefore, they will be upping the dosage for each as your labor progresses.

Now, oxytocin does a lot of things. It was obviously designed in our bodies for a reason. Not only does it increase your bonding with your baby, but when released in the brain during labor it acts as a natural pain suppressant **For Mom And Baby** without "drugging baby up" or causing any harm to baby whatsoever. Babies also feel discomfit during birth. If you are not producing oxytocin because your body cannot feel the pain, your baby will be in more discomfort...and that's when babies go into distress. You are Far more likely to end up with a C section if you choose to allow these two medications.

The best way to refrain from this is to:
-birth naturally
-don't birth on your back! (Think- Gravity)
-if at all possible, birth at home. 
It is scientifically proven that when you leave your element to birth, i.e. Walking into the hospital, your labor will on average be twice as long as it would've been in your own environment.

One thing I learned in my child birth class with my first is that any pain meds besides the epidural go into you bloodstream which in turn goes into your baby. So there is a chance of baby being "drugged up" when delivered if you do pain medicine. As for an epidural it goes in your spinal cord area and numbs everything but it's not in your bloodstream. With my first I planned on an all natural labor which didn't work out for me, so I got the epidural.

Ditto on the Stadol. It was horrible and I was completely out of it. Couldnt wait for it to wear off. Ended up with the epidural which worked well for me in terms of pain control but I didnt like my legs being so numb and feeling like I was handicapped. I had an extremely long and difficult first labor so I'm glad I had the epidural available, but next time I will be going for an all natural birth to avoid all the side effects.

When I was in labor with my son I had been in labor for 3 days and I just couldn't handle anymore pain. So I chose to do the statol to take the edge off until the epidural guy could get there. I really don't suggest the statol I just felt like I had no control over my body. I don't remember getting my epidural I slept my entire labor they had to wake me up to push! I won't be making that mistake again this time. Tough it out for the epidural!! And tell the nurse you have a low tolerance to pain meds!!

I agree with April. Don't get the statol. I'm super sensitive to meds of any kind. I wanted to try and have a natural birth by after 24 hours I couldn't take the pain any more. I still didn't want to jump to an epidural so I tried the statol and it made me hallucinate, it was literally like what I imagine doing acid would be like. It was terrible. I eventually got the epidural after the other drug wore off and I knew what was going on. My recommendation is that if you feel as though you can't take it anymore just go right for the epidural. It takes them about 30 min to get there and do it then 15 min for it to kick in, so also make sure you don't wait to long to ask for it. I was in agony by the time the guy got there to do it.
