Pregnant and eating at a buffet.

So the family wants to go to a Golden Corral buffet and I read that it's not safe for pregnant women. Any advice?

Also, when food is cooked quickly and cheaply for a buffet it often isn't cooked as well as it should be or in the most hygienic circumstances.

The conditions that food is kept in for a buffet creates a good breeding ground for bacteria, some of which is potentially harmful to the fetus. Pregnant women also have a compromised immune system so are more susceptible to food poisoning.

I've gone, just make sure you trust the place and if it looks like it's been sitting out awhile skip (chicken salad, etc).

I don't see it as any less safe than eating out in general

I love Golden Corral, never had any problems eating there. I eat at the Chinese buffet even more than GC, still no problems.

We used to do buffets as a kid...I very rarely go to one these days. After a local man walking into whole foods and pouring something on the salad bar... I just don't trust them. You have no idea how many people use the utensils properly, or washed their hands, or have a flesh eating bacteria. No thanks I'm good and you should pass too

I don't because I don't trust that the food is 100% safe. Food after being prepared has to be held at a certain temperature range and can only be held at that temp range for a certain amount of time before it has to be tossed because of the introduction of bacteria. You don't know who has been sick around it coughing, sneezing or touching pieces. I don't do them not pregnant either. I know many have done it and are completely fine. But for me I personally do not.

Maybe see if you can find a recent health inspection

It's not safe because there is a chance that it's not being held at proper temperatures, but we take that chance with grocery shopping as well. My best advice would be to get food from the bottom of the pans because they will be closest to the proper temperatures. If the trays aren't steaming, avoid that dish.
