36 weeks bloodwork/delayed cord clamping

Daron
Yesterday I went to my 36 week checkup. I wasn't dilated or effaced yet. I got the strep b test but I also had blood work done and they said it would be the last time I needed to. I didn't think to ask what it was for at the time. Did anyone else have to have bloodwork? Do you know what it was for? (My glucose test was fine when I took it around 28 weeks and everything else has been fine except for that I had low vitamin D in the first trimester bloodwork but I have been taking vitamin D as directed since then.)
Also I asked my doctor about delayed cord clamping. She said that she usually doesn't do it in term babies because it can increase the risk of jaundice and is only really a benefit to preemies.. However afterward I read that the increase is like a 2% chance and it could have been due to another factor in the study. It is something we really wanted done. We aren't really "hellbent" on anything else except skin to skin contact which they already do and that I want to breastfeed so it's not like we have some huge detailed birth plan. I don't want to be an annoying patient but I think we want to push it being done if everything goes smoothly since it only takes a few minutes. Has anyone done this despite your doctor's recommendations? How did you address it? What did you say?

For one its your baby so if that's what you want the dr has no right to tell you no. I will be doing delayed cord clamping I have read a lot and it is worth doing. I would just tell them that's what you want and the dr needs to respect that.

I hope not, because like you said there is no harm in it

It's the baby's blood and I'm sure if you tell your dr that you for sure want it I am sure they won't deny that. It will not harm either of you.

I mean in the end, everyone else including the father and I turned out fine without the delayed cord clamping! Although I was a preemie and I've had low iron, I'm still healthy so I know it isn't life or death, just something I don't think is irrational to ask for since its only a few more minutes

I'm only 17 weeks and I already mentioned it to my doctor. She agreed on the benefits and didn't mention anything bad about it. She also said they will give me an hr of skin on skin before they do all the measuring of baby and stuff. I say you mention it again. It's your baby and your delivery. Hope everything works out for you! Good luck!

Thank you! Good luck to you too! I should have said something earlier. She didn't seem totally against it so I hope she will be open to it when we ask again, especially if they are waiting for my boyfriend to cut the cord. He said that he would like to say um can we wait a second!

This is the first article I came across so I would check that it is a reliable source but it's a starting point to ask questions.

Wow that's a great read and disturbing too. I didn't know they could sell that blood. I will definitely be reading everything I sign and asking questions if they do not allow me for whatever dumb reason not to delay the cord clamping. Thank you for showing me this!

It's your baby and if that's what you want to for it. My doctor said there's no proven down sides worth mentioning and only good things from what he knows. He said it's not what they usually do but that if I want it he will gladly do whatever I decide for my child.

I will definitely ask

Totally agree with you! Wow, I've never thought about that but that makes sense that that could be why they wouldn't want people taking it. I hope they wouldn't waste it but I hope they let me choose first!

I'm my opinion the downside is much like getting vaccinated. a small risk for a huge reward.

I hate to say it but some doctors have certain things in a birth plan that they just will not do. You can push and try but unfortunately I think you breached the subject a little late so you may not have a choice if the doctor refuses.

I know, I knew about it earlier on but every time I went I either totally forgot to ask or I was afraid to ask. I asked a question one time in the beginning and she kinda acted smart about it. I should have been smart back but I just laughed it off unfortunately.
