Episiotomy?? Thoughts ?

How many of you have had to get one, and how long did it take to recover ? Also, how many of you said no to one, and how was the recovery ??

I'm on my 4th, and I've never had one or been offered one. The preferred method now is to rip naturally because the healing is better- less scar tissue from what I understand. I did tear with my first two (both were over 9 lbs), and healing was no different than when I didn't tear. Everything is so swollen and irritated for the first week or two anyway that you'll likely not notice if you tore or not. There was no difference for me in the weeks after birth when I tore vs when I didn't. Hope that helps :)

I had one with my daughter which I don't think was necessary. My doctor never even mentioned it to me. She wasn't even there until the very end. The healing time wasn't too bad, I had 3 stitches and they eventually dissolved and I healed, but I am making sure I don't get it again.

I have had an episiotomy with one,  tore with one,  and nothing with one.  It all feels the same.  But with the episiotomy i was numb so i didn't feel it,  same with the tearing do i don't know and with my last,  my tiniest who weighed 6.5 lbs it hurt just as bad as the other two in the end. Good luck,  btw the pain is over before you realize it was even there.  :)

I had an episiotomy when I delivered my son. It was an emergency situation  otherwise the DR likely never would have done it. Recovery was terrible for me, about 2 weeks of pain when sitting or standing. Few more weeks of uncomfortable feeling. But it got my son here safety so I can't really regret it.

I never wanted one, but I had a different doctor at delivery and there was a language barrier. She basically did whatever she wanted because she couldn't communicate with me. She did the episiotomy after my epidural wore off. It was the most painful part of the delivery. I was really angry because it was unnecessary, she did it just to speed things along. Anyway, it took me about 8 weeks to heal.

NO NO NO!! Not unless it is an emergency situation. With my first, my doctor cut me so deep, I couldn't lay sit or stand for weeks!! I ended up popping my stitches a few days post partum and got the WORST infection. Omg never again! Your better tearing on your own.

I had one but don't have anything to compare the healing time to. I didn't think it was very long. I had an almost 10lb baby so everything hurt anyway

I put in my birth plan that I didn't want one unless it was 100% necessary as I had been to a few parenting classes and they said your better to tear and heal naturally than be cut. Didn't have one for my daughter and only tore a tiny bit on inside, stung when I peed after but a week or so later was fine xx

I had it, it doesn't hurt the minute they cut it but later it hurts for a few weeks. I used cold pads and it helped a bit.

No thank you. Most women don't need one and don't end up tearing on their own if they allow labor to progress naturally. The tearing happen usually at the doctors will or because of the huge "PUSH"es that women are coached to do instead of following their own instincts to bear down and push when their body is ready.
