Crib bumpers?! Opinions please!

My SO and I took an infant CPR and safety class last night and one of the topics that came up was about crib bumpers. The instructors basically said absolutely not to use them because they are a huge suffocation risk. Infant rolls over and has his or her face on the bumper they can suffocate. We just got a brand new bedding set and of course it includes a bumper! And I asked about the mesh bumpers and they said that they're too new to know if they're really safe or not. Opinions?!
