Is valtrex safe for pregnancy?

Has anyone taken valtrex while pregnant and it was okay? My OB nurse prescribed it to help my cold sore heal a little quicker so I'm guessing it's alright but everything says don't take if you're pregnant so I'm confused?

Answer

It's safer to take while you're pregnant than to not take and pass on something to your newborn. I'm not sure how far along you are though.  There was a case where a family member who had an undetectable cold sore kissed a newborn and the baby died because his immune system was not strong enough to fight off the disease.
