When the best time in a cycle to get a papsmear?

I'm in my mid 20s and never had a papsmear. I've tried going in for one and never got through it because it's painful, and my cervix is pretty tight. It's like they force the speculum in there after they pulled out the speculum (I begged to take that thing out!) I was bleeding and bled for days later. She did mention I had a retroverted cervix. Hmm.  I was thinking the best time to go is when I'm ovulating? The cervix softens and opens up during that time right?
