I would guess that it depends on how quickly the doctor wants baby out. I was induced at 41w 5d just because I was overdue. I got one dose of the cervix gel and that was enough to start contractions. I had mild contractions for the next 24 hours but because I was comfortable and making slow steady progress they let me go ahead. In 24 hours I was 6-7 cm dialated but then my contractions stopped and I didn't progress for 3 hours so they started the pitocin at that point and i went the last 3 cm and delivered in about 3.5 hours. So for me it was about 28 hours total but they weren't very pushy with the meds, jut gave me enough to kick start things and let my body do as much as possible from then on.
