being told we need to do the cry it out method

First off I will start with saying that I don't put down either choice but I personally am not against the cry it out method. I plan to use that. However I find it disturbing that I had my daughter less than 2 weeks ago and people are already telling me I need to just let her cry....is that common? do you let your new born baby cry and cry and cry? or am I in the minority on this?
