Should people who abandon their pets be charged with abandonment of pets?

My friend just had a dog dumped in her backyard. The person that left the dog wasn't too smart and abandoned close to their own home. So she actually tracked down the owners who then said they had been 'getting rid' of their dog and are not interested in picking it up. 
She's keeping the dog 😘 he will be loved & spoiled

Yes! Seriously if you don't want your pet anymore, at least have the decency to find it a good home. I volunteer at an animal shelter and it's soooo sad because the main breeds there are pits, German Shepards, one crippled husky and chihuahuas. Arguably some of the most popular dogs. And they were all found as strays or abandoned. Someone else would LOVE to have that pet, don't just leave them on the streets to fend for themselves. This reminds me of last year when 5 newborn kittens were dumped like trash in a field. Thankfully a field worker spotted them and told his daughter who posted it and that's where I stepped in. When I picked them up, they were close to death. Poor babies were so happy to be rescued. And all but one (my baby) got rehomed! It's not that hard people!!!!

Absolutely. This would fall under laws against animal cruelty and neglect. Your friend should report them.

Absolutely. If you can't care for a living being, DONT GET ONE. They should be treated the same and abandoned. Screw all animal abusers and animal neglecting people.

People like that should be dumped in the middle of nowhere without food or water. Let's see what's going to happen then. Ugh humanity these days.

First of all your friend is amazing for keeping the dog 😃 I HATE people who just abandon their animals and seem to think it's okay, they don't deserve animals at all. I cannot understand how anyone could do this 😡 you get some real ass holes out there😡 the dog will have a much better life now with your friend

YES. It's not just abandonment it's abuse. To just leave an animal that depends on you for survival.

So in my town/general area, the cost of owning a horse became too much. It's an expensive animal to keep and people wouldwilly nilly but them as "pets" for their kid's bdays, and then abandon them when they got too expensive.

A vet friend of ours went out on a trail ride and when she got back to the parking lot there were two horses hitched to her trailer. No one in sight. Another was an Arabian mare we had to take care of for awhile.

My grandma was checking out realestate (she used to fix and sell houses) and one of the homes that had been vacated still had the mare chained to a fence in a 12x12 yard of dirt. We thought we'd have to put her down because of malnourishment and how aggressive she was. Luckily she found a good home after we spent months working with her. She went to a high schooler looking for a project animal.

Yes, they should be charged with abandonment, neglect, and abuse! 1 of my clients rescued a dog that had been left behind when the owners sold the house and moved out, the new owners went on christmas eve for the 1st time since buying it to take measurements, they found him in a cupboard drinking his own wee to survive,  they rushed him to a vet, 24 hours more and he wouldn't be here today, he still suffers from the trauma. I've seen hundreds of dogs abandoned and had a few left on my doorstep with a note saying 'no longer wanted I'm your problem now'. There should be stricter laws, you couldn't do that to a child so why should a furkid be any different?

I think they might already have a law passed that does this. Im not 100% sure . and it might not be in every state. But im pretty sure you can be punished..
