Does your "number" matter?

Does the number of sexual partners you've had matter? My best friend and I were just discussing this and she feels it matters. My boyfriend also said that he prides himself on his (relatively) low number. But I feel like it doesn't matter how many sexual partners you've had, as long as you're safe.
